Claude Cowork: what it is, who can use it, and how to share what it makes
Cowork is where Claude stops answering and starts doing the work. Here is what it is, which plans and apps have it, what it hands back, and how to get that in front of a client.
The short answer
Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s agent for knowledge work. It uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code, with no terminal: you describe an outcome, Claude works through the steps on its own, and you come back to finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations and research. Claude Cowork is on paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise), on desktop, web and mobile. Since September 16, 2026, Anthropic has been folding it into one Claude, so on many Pro and Max accounts there is no separate Cowork button anymore.
Claude Cowork, explained
What Claude Cowork does that chat does not
A chat answers one prompt at a time. Cowork takes a task. Anthropic’s examples: pull a week of marketing numbers into a three-slide readout, reconcile regional exports against a budget and flag the variances, review a folder of contracts against a playbook and write a memo per contract. Claude breaks the work into parts, runs some in parallel, and shows each step as it goes, so you can redirect it.
Per Anthropic’s help center, Cowork can work in folders on your computer (desktop app), open and use websites in a built-in browser, use the apps you connected (Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365, Slack and others), run tasks on a schedule, and group related work into projects with their own files, instructions and memory. A permission setting controls how much it checks with you: Manual (the default) asks before actions, Auto keeps going with automated safety checks.
Cowork is now just Claude
Is Claude Cowork now just Claude?
Increasingly, yes. On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude: you ask for anything in the same conversation, and Claude decides whether it is a quick answer or a task. The new experience is rolling out gradually to Pro and Max on web, desktop and mobile. Anthropic says Team and Free plans will follow, and Enterprise admins get at least 30 days’ notice. If your message box still shows “Chat” and “Cowork,” you do not have it yet; select Cowork to hand over a task.
One more change is dated: from October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in the cloud, and the “Only on your computer” option goes away. Work keeps running when you close your laptop. Claude still reaches the folders you connected, through the desktop app, while it is open.
Plans and apps
Who can use Claude Cowork, and where
Cowork is on paid plans only: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Availability by app, per Anthropic as of September 30, 2026:
Claude Desktop (macOS, Windows)
All paid plans. The full experience: Claude can also work in folders on your computer and use a built-in browser.
Web (claude.ai)
Pro, Max and Team. Enterprise where an admin has turned it on.
Mobile (iOS, Android)
Pro, Max and Team, in the latest app. Enterprise where an admin has turned it on.
Chrome side panel
Max and Team, rolling out to Pro. Enterprise where an admin has turned it on.
On Team and Enterprise, Cowork is on by default and an Owner can switch it off. Running Cowork in the cloud is a separate setting: on by default for Team, off by default for Enterprise. Web and mobile are marked beta.
What it makes
What Claude Cowork produces
Documents
Formatted reports, memos and write-ups, plus Markdown drafts you can edit in place with “Edit with Claude.”
Spreadsheets
Excel files with working formulas, like a month-end roll-up with variances flagged.
Presentations
Slide decks you can open in PowerPoint, or keep refining with Claude.
Research
Synthesized findings from the web, your files and your connected apps, like a tool comparison or interview themes.
Organized files
On desktop, Claude can sort, rename and create files in a folder you connect.
Visuals and artifacts
Charts, diagrams and interactive visuals, and on paid plans designs, slides and living docs (in beta).
Where it goes
Where Cowork’s output ends up
Cloud sessions and the files Claude makes are saved to your Claude account, so the same work is there on desktop, web and mobile. From there, you download the file, let Claude write it into a folder you connected on your computer, or have it save to a connected app such as Google Drive. Visual work becomes an artifact you can keep editing.
Sharing an artifact follows your plan. On Pro and Max you choose “Only you” or “Anyone with the link,” or invite people by email (beta), who then sign in with a Claude account. On Team and Enterprise, artifacts stay inside your organization unless an Owner allows outside sharing. That works well for teammates. For a client, it leaves gaps: an invited client needs a Claude account, and Anthropic’s sharing docs do not describe a password, an alert when the link is opened, or serving it from your own domain.
Share it with a client
Send what Cowork makes as a private, tracked link
Pagelive connects to Claude as a custom connector, so Cowork can publish its own work. Anthropic says custom connectors work in Cowork on every Claude plan; Free includes one.
Add Pagelive as a custom connector
In Claude, open Customize → Connectors → + → Add custom connector, paste the Pagelive connector URL, and sign in to Pagelive once.
Hand Cowork the task
Ask for the deliverable as a web page: “Turn this analysis into a one-page client report as HTML and publish it with Pagelive.”
Get a private link back
Claude publishes the page and returns the link. It is noindex by default, and your client opens it without a Claude account.
Lock it, send it, see it opened
Add a password or ask for a verified email, send the link, and get an email when it is opened, with how long they read.
The Pagelive connector page has the connector URL and a short setup video. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds the connector under Organization settings first, then each member connects. Your client opens the link without an account. On Solo you can add a password or a verified email, send each person their own recipient link, get an email when it is opened with how long they read, let the client comment and approve on the page, and use your own domain. When you revise, Claude updates the same link.
Free for 2 public pages. Solo is $15/mo. See pricing, or how consultants use it for proposals. Working in Claude Code instead? See publishing from Claude Code.
Frequently asked
Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s way of handing Claude a whole task instead of one prompt at a time. It uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code, with no terminal: you describe an outcome, Claude works through the steps (reading files, browsing, running code) and hands back finished work such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations and research.
Yes, for a growing number of people. On September 16, 2026 Anthropic started merging Cowork and chat into one Claude: you ask for anything in one conversation and Claude decides whether it is a quick answer or a task. It is rolling out to Pro and Max first; Anthropic says Team and Free plans will follow. Team and Enterprise keep separate Chat and Cowork for now.
No. As of September 30, 2026, Anthropic lists Cowork on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Enterprise admins decide who gets it on web and mobile. Anthropic has said the merged Claude experience will reach Free plans later, but has not said which Cowork features that includes.
They share an engine, not a job. Anthropic describes Cowork as bringing Claude Code’s agentic capabilities to knowledge work beyond coding, with no terminal. Claude Code is for developers working in a codebase; Cowork is for documents, spreadsheets, decks, research and files.
Both, for now. Sessions in the cloud keep running when you close your laptop and follow you across desktop, web and mobile. From October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in the cloud. Claude still reaches folders on your computer through the desktop app, but only while it is open.
Cloud sessions and their files are saved to your Claude account, so you can pick them up on any device. You can download the files, have Claude write them into a folder you connected on your computer (desktop app open), or save them to a connected app such as Google Drive.
Claude’s own sharing depends on your plan. On Pro and Max, an artifact can be shared with anyone who has the link, or with invited people who sign in with a Claude account. On Team and Enterprise, artifacts stay inside the organization unless an Owner allows outside sharing. For a client who should not need an account, publish the page with Pagelive and send that link.
Yes. Anthropic says custom connectors work in Claude, Cowork and Claude Desktop on every plan, and the Free plan includes one custom connector. Add Pagelive under Customize → Connectors, then ask Claude to publish what it made. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds the connector for the organization first.
