What is ChatGPT Sites? Privacy, domains and plans

ChatGPT can now build a website and host it for you. Here is what ChatGPT Sites does, who can open a Site, what it costs, and where it stops when the page is for a client.

The short answer

ChatGPT Sites is OpenAI’s built-in website builder and host. You describe a website, dashboard or lightweight app in ChatGPT, it builds the Site, shows you a private preview, and publishes it to a ChatGPT-hosted URL that you share with the people you choose. As of September 30, 2026, Sites is in public beta on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and not on Free or Go.

At a glance

ChatGPT Sites in six answers

Per OpenAI’s help center and developer guide, checked September 30, 2026. Sites is a beta, so details move.

Plans

Public beta on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Not on Free or Go. Enterprise admins switch it on per role.

Where you build

In Work on ChatGPT web, or in Work or Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app. Not in the ChatGPT Classic app.

Who can open it

Only you and your workspace admins, until you change it. Then selected people, your workspace, invited outside viewers, or anyone on the internet.

Custom domain

Yes, where available: bring a domain you own and add the DNS records Sites gives you. Not in Enterprise workspaces at launch.

Limits

Plan-specific beta limits across all your Sites. OpenAI shows them inside Sites rather than publishing numbers.

Regions

At launch, public publishing and the wider beta were not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.

ChatGPT Sites, explained

What ChatGPT Sites actually does

Sites turns a prompt into something people can open in a browser. OpenAI’s examples are dashboards, project trackers, launch calendars, prototypes, internal portals and reports. It is more than a static page: a Site can keep data in a database, store uploaded files, and offer Sign in with ChatGPT. In Business and Enterprise workspaces, a Site can also read from each visitor’s own connected apps, like an issue dashboard that shows everyone their own tickets.

Publishing has two stages. ChatGPT saves a version you can review, and deploying a version makes it live. OpenAI is explicit that every deployment URL is a production URL, so save and review first. The Site also tracks unique visitors and page views over time, without an analytics snippet (not for Sites owned by an Enterprise workspace).

How to use it

How to create a ChatGPT Site

Sites is not in the ChatGPT Classic desktop app. Use Work on the web, or the current desktop app.

1

Open Work

On the web, select Work. In the desktop app, select ChatGPT and then Work, or open Codex.

2

Ask for a website

Describe what you want and include the word “website” or mention @Sites. Add the content, files, data and links it should use.

3

Review the private preview

ChatGPT builds the Site and shows you a preview only you can see. Ask for changes until it is right.

4

Choose who can open it, then publish

Select Share, pick the audience under Who has access, and publish. Copy the link to send it.

+ +

Privacy

Can a ChatGPT Site be private?

Yes, and private is the default. A new Site is limited to its owner and workspace admins until you change it. Under Share, Who has access, the options OpenAI lists are: owner and workspace admins, selected people or groups, anyone in the workspace, named viewers outside the workspace (invited by email), and anyone on the internet when public publishing is allowed. In Enterprise workspaces, public publishing is off until an admin turns it on.

Anyone you invite must sign in with the account that received access. OpenAI’s docs describe sign-in based access, not a password on the link, and no email to you when someone opens it. A public Site opens for anyone, with no ChatGPT account needed.

Domains, plans and regions

Custom domain, plans, limits and where it works

Custom domain. Where it is available, open the Site’s settings, select Add domain, enter an apex domain or subdomain you already own, and add the DNS records Sites gives you. Sites does not register domains for you, and custom domains were not available in Enterprise workspaces at launch. You can also change the ChatGPT-hosted URL; the old address redirects.

Plans and limits. OpenAI lists Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu (its July launch note also named Pro Lite). Business workspaces have Sites on by default; Enterprise admins enable it per role. During the beta, usage is included up to plan-specific limits that ChatGPT shows you inside Sites. OpenAI does not publish the numbers, so we will not guess them. At a limit you may not be able to create a new Site, add storage, or keep a high-traffic Site public.

Regions. In its July 9, 2026 launch note, OpenAI wrote that public publishing and the expanded beta rollout were not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the United Kingdom at launch. The current help articles do not list regions, and we found no later note that lifts this. Sites also does not support data residency at launch. If you are in Europe, check the Sites view in your own account.

Client work

When a Site is for a client, not your team

Sites is built for web apps and internal tools, and it is good at them. A proposal or report you send to one client needs different things.

ChatGPT Sites column per OpenAI’s help center and developer guide as of September 2026. “Not in OpenAI’s docs” means we could not find it described there; happy to be corrected.

Pick Sites when you are building an app: a tracker with a database, a tool your team signs into, a dashboard on live data. Pagelive hosts pages, not apps, and has no database or backend.

Pick Pagelive when the thing is a page for a client: a proposal, a report, a pitch, a one-pager. Your client opens it without an account. You can put it behind a password or a verified email, give each person their own recipient link, get an email the moment it is opened with how long they read, let them comment and approve on the page, and serve it from your own domain. Pages are noindex by default.

Publish from ChatGPT

Publish the same HTML with Pagelive, from ChatGPT itself

Developer mode needs a paid ChatGPT plan (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu) and works on the web.

1

Ask for one HTML file

In any ChatGPT chat, ask for the proposal, report or one-pager as a single, self-contained HTML file.

2

Connect Pagelive in Developer mode

Turn on Developer mode, add Pagelive as an app with its connector URL, and sign in once. It needs a paid plan and works on the web.

3

Say “publish this with Pagelive”

ChatGPT publishes the page and hands back a private, noindex link. No ChatGPT account needed to open it.

4

Lock it and send it

Add a password or ask for a verified email, then send the link. You get an email when your client opens it.

The MCP quickstart has the connector URL and a short video of the ChatGPT setup. In Business and Enterprise workspaces, an admin enables Developer mode first. No paid ChatGPT plan, or prefer not to connect anything? Save the HTML and drop the file into Pagelive: same link, same tracking. Free for 2 public pages. Passwords, verified email, comments and your own domain come with Solo at $15/mo. See pricing.
